Philadelphia Roll

When I ordered Philadelphia rolls, I was expecting something similar to Boston rolls. However, what I got was actually much different. And in this case, that difference was not exactly a good thing.

Philadelphia rolls are made from salmon, cream cheese, and avocado. All of the ingredients are then wrapped in rice and nori as usual.

When I first tasted the Philadelphia rolls, I thought they were pretty good. However, soon after this the full flavor of the sushi hit me and realized they were not so great.

The main issue to me was the amount of cream cheese. I am not a fan of cream cheese and there was a lot of it in the rolls.

Even if I liked cream cheese there was still too much of it. The amount of cream cheese in the roll was just too overpowering. The cream cheese was almost the only ingredient I could taste.

Another issue I had with the sushi was the texture. Between the cream cheese and avocado, the rolls really lack much solid content.

The mushy texture of the sushi certainly didn’t help it taste any better. Even the salmon, which was the most solid ingredient in the roll, has a somewhat mushy texture itself.

If there was less cream cheese and avocado in the roll, the taste and texture would certainly improve. Although I think there should still be more ingredients in the Philadelphia rolls just to add more to the flavor. With only cream cheese, avocado, and salmon, there isn’t much variety in the flavor.

Overall the texture and flavor of the sushi made it not very enjoyable to eat. In fact, Philadelphia rolls are the first kind of sushi that I didn’t finish eating because I didn’t like them. Even when I drenched them in soy sauce (which is my usual technique for masking flavors I don’t like), I couldn’t keep eating them.

Maybe Philadelphia rolls would be better with the ingredients used in different proportions or with something added to give them some texture, but either way I won’t be ordering them again.

Fantasy Roll

The fantasy roll doesn’t have much in it, which made me think it might have a boring taste. However, it actually turned out to be one of the better sushi rolls I’ve had.

The fantasy roll is made from crab and spicy mayo wrapped in rice and nori. Smelt (a small minnow-like fish) roe is then sprinkled on the outside.

When I got my fantasy rolls the first thing I noticed was that there were two pieces of crab in each roll. This seemed like a lot of meat to put in one roll, but since the meat is the only major ingredient in fantasy rolls that was okay. My problem wasn’t the amount of meat, but the fact that it was crab meat, which I am not a fan of.

While I was weary of eating that much crab meat, I ate the fantasy rolls anyway. The taste was much better than I expected and was actually pretty good.

The crab flavor was a little strong, but it wasn’t really overpowering. However, I do think the second piece of crab was unnecessary.

While I didn’t actually notice the spicy mayo or smelt roe particularly, they must have had a bigger impact on the flavor than I realized. I don’t believe I would have enjoyed the sushi at all if all I was able to taste was the crab meat in it. So while the mayo and roe didn’t stand out as big flavors, the subtle changes they made on the sushi had a big effect on the overall flavor.

With that being said, the most prominent flavor in the fantasy roll was still by far that of the crab meat. While the flavor isn’t bad, I definitely wouldn’t want to eat many of these rolls by themselves. I would always prefer to have something to dip these in (I usually like to dip my sushi in either shrimp sauce or soy sauce) or another food to go with them (in my case I did have some tuna rolls with the fantasy rolls).

Overall, the fantasy rolls were good, but not good enough to become one of my favorites. I might order them again sometime in the future, but probably not very regularly.

Spicy Tuna Roll

When I ordered spicy tuna rolls, I was expecting something like the tuna rolls (just a piece of tuna wrapped in rice and nori) but with a little extra to give it a kick. However, I was pleasantly surprised with a roll much different than the tuna roll that also tasted really good!

The spicy tuna roll is made using tuna mixed with chili oil and Tobiko (flying fish roe, or eggs). These are added to the roll with cucumber and avocado, and rolled up in rice and nori. The sushi I had also had spicy kind of shrimp sauce dribbled on top.

I wasn’t sure quite what to expect when I got my spicy tuna rolls. I am not a big fan of things that are really spicy and did not know just how spicy the sushi was going to be. However, the spiciness was not a problem and actually added a nice touch to the rolls.

The chili oil and spicy shrimp sauce did not create enough spiciness to overpower. The spiciness did, however add to the flavor and improve the sushi overall.

I was expecting the spicy tuna roll to taste at least a little similar to the tuna roll, however, there was really not much in common between to two types of sushi. While there was tuna in it, it had several other flavors involved and tasted very different than the tuna roll.

The texture of the spicy tuna roll was much better than that of the tuna roll due to the other ingredients. The cucumber and Tobiko gave the sushi a crunchiness, which added a nice touch to the roll overall.

Overall the spicy tuna roll is a very good type of sushi. It has really good flavors that all work together very well. The spiciness certainly doesn’t overpower any of the other flavors, and the crunchiness adds a nice touch to the sushi as well. All in all the spicy tuna roll is good enough to rank as one of new favorite kinds of sushi, and I will certainly be ordering them again sometime soon.
