Sushi Ranked

With the semester coming to a close, I’ve decided to summarize and rank all of the different types of sushi I’ve had since starting this blog. So far I’ve tried 13 different kinds of sushi. Here they are, ranked from my personal favorite to least favorite:

  1. Spicy Tuna Roll – When I first tried spicy tuna rolls, I quickly knew they were my new favorite. The flavors all work well together to create a great taste!
  2. Spider Roll – I wasn’t expecting to like spider rolls, but they were actually very good. The sushi has a light sweet taste to it, and it goes well with the breaded crab inside.
  3. Spicy Salmon Roll – Spicy salmon rolls taste almost exactly like spicy tuna rolls, but the flavor is a little more mild, so I prefer spicy tuna rolls.
  4. Boston Roll – Boston rolls were my favorite type of sushi for a long time until I started trying new kinds. The taste is simple but still good.
  5. Tuna Roll – Tuna rolls are very simple but still have a pretty good flavor.
  6. Eel Roll – Eel rolls are another kind of sushi with a sweet taste. The flavors are pretty good, though sometimes the unagi’s flavor can be overpowered.
  7. Fantasy Roll – Fantasy rolls are good but have two peices of meat in them, which is a little too much for me.
  8. Shrimp Tempura Roll – Shrimp tempura rolls can be good, but their lack of ingredients make them get kind of boring.
  9. California Roll – California rolls have almost the same ingredients as Boston rolls, but they use crab instead of shrimp. This actually makes a pretty big difference, and I definitely prefer Boston rolls.
  10. Salmon Roll – Salmon rolls are very simple, and their texture can sometimes be unpleasant. To me, tuna rolls are a better choice.
  11. Vegetable Roll – Vegetable rolls are a nice refreshing side, but are extremely boring on their own. I would much rather have sushi with meat in it.
  12. Fried Roll – Fried rolls are the heaviest type of sushi I’ve had. There’s a lot of flavors, and they really don’t work that great together. It’s hard to eat many of these.
  13. Philadelphia Roll – Philly rolls have a lot of cream cheese. So much, in fact, that it’s almost all that can be tasted in the sushi.

So far I’ve found several new favorites since beginning this blog! Branching out has forced me to try types of sushi I never would have tried otherwise. Hopefully my luck will continue and I’ll find even more in the future!

Spicy Tuna Roll

When I ordered spicy tuna rolls, I was expecting something like the tuna rolls (just a piece of tuna wrapped in rice and nori) but with a little extra to give it a kick. However, I was pleasantly surprised with a roll much different than the tuna roll that also tasted really good!

The spicy tuna roll is made using tuna mixed with chili oil and Tobiko (flying fish roe, or eggs). These are added to the roll with cucumber and avocado, and rolled up in rice and nori. The sushi I had also had spicy kind of shrimp sauce dribbled on top.

I wasn’t sure quite what to expect when I got my spicy tuna rolls. I am not a big fan of things that are really spicy and did not know just how spicy the sushi was going to be. However, the spiciness was not a problem and actually added a nice touch to the rolls.

The chili oil and spicy shrimp sauce did not create enough spiciness to overpower. The spiciness did, however add to the flavor and improve the sushi overall.

I was expecting the spicy tuna roll to taste at least a little similar to the tuna roll, however, there was really not much in common between to two types of sushi. While there was tuna in it, it had several other flavors involved and tasted very different than the tuna roll.

The texture of the spicy tuna roll was much better than that of the tuna roll due to the other ingredients. The cucumber and Tobiko gave the sushi a crunchiness, which added a nice touch to the roll overall.

Overall the spicy tuna roll is a very good type of sushi. It has really good flavors that all work together very well. The spiciness certainly doesn’t overpower any of the other flavors, and the crunchiness adds a nice touch to the sushi as well. All in all the spicy tuna roll is good enough to rank as one of new favorite kinds of sushi, and I will certainly be ordering them again sometime soon.

Tuna Roll

One very simple yet still good type of sushi is the tuna roll. The tuna roll has very few ingredients and is one of the most simple types of sushi. Despite its simplicity, however, it is still very good.

Tuna rolls are made of just one piece of raw tuna wrapped in rice and nori with the rice on the interior, and that’s all. There are not many ingredients in them at all. The lack of many ingredients doesn’t mean the roll is bad though!

There obviously are not many flavors in the tuna roll due to there being so few ingredients. It has a very simple taste, and the fact that the tuna is the only thing inside the roll means that it is about the only thing you taste.

The tuna has a good taste but I’m not a big fan of the texture and wish there were more ingredients inside the sushi to cover it up. With only the tuna inside the roll the flavor can quickly, it can be kind of monotonous.

The simplicity of the roll can make it taste kind of boring after a while, but dipping the sushi in a sauce such as soy sauce was enough to make it more interesting in my case. By themselves, though, the tuna rolls’ taste would quickly become very boring.

Being so simple is not a necessarily a bad thing though. The simplicity can actually go nice with a more complex or heavy food as a refreshing change. However, having just tuna rolls for a meal would probably be quite boring and need something else to go along with it.

The tuna roll is a very simple type of sushi, but is definitely still good. However, the flavor can get a little boring sometimes. But despite being so simple and sometimes a little boring, it is still has a good taste and makes a nice addition to other food. I’ll certainly order tuna rolls again – just not as my main meal.

Fried Roll

(“Fried roll” is the name of this sushi on the menu I ordered  from, but is more of a general name than the proper name for this sushi)

Fried sushi did not sound good to me at all. I was under the impression that sushi should never be fried, and that it couldn’t possibly taste good when it was. Because of this, I was reluctant to order the fried roll. However, since I’m attempting to try out different kinds of sushi, I decided I’d give it a shot.

The fried roll wasn’t really what I was expecting – but that’s a good thing. It’s nothing like what I think of when I think about sushi, but it isn’t bad. It was a very interesting kind of sushi, and was much better than I was expecting.

The fried roll is made from white tuna, yellowtail (or Japanese amberjack – a type of fish), avocado, and kani (imitation crab sticks made from fish meat). All of these ingredients are wrapped in rice and nori (seaweed), but with the rice on the interior of the roll instead of the outside. The whole roll is then deep-fried and sriracha is drizzled on top.

This first thing I noticed about my fried rolls was that they did not look pretty. They didn’t look like they could possibly taste good. They were also large, and eating them was somewhat difficult because of it (I prefer small sushi rolls that can be eaten as one bite so all of the ingredients can be tasted together). However, when I tried them, they were better than I expected.

Fried rolls are much heavier than the other types of sushi I’ve tried, which made them seem almost like they weren’t actually sushi, but some other kind of food. The different ingredients all worked well together to create a good flavor, just not really a sushi flavor. The fried flavor was almost too strong, but I could still taste the ingredients. However, with both jalapeno and sriracha in the roll, it was really spicy, and the spiciness started to somewhat cover up the other flavors as I ate more. Between the roll being fried and the spiciness, it was hard to eat very many of these.

Fried rolls have a good taste, but don’t really seem like sushi to me. I prefer lighter, more fresh types of sushi. The spiciness and fried aspect of the sushi rolls were too strong and made it difficult to continue eating them. While the fried rolls tasted good, I probably won’t be ordering them much more.
